Robot Claw Assembly

Robot Claw Assembly

The Sparkfun Robot Claw is a great peice of kit, but putting it together (which should be easy) is made a little awkward because the servo mounting holes are not quite in the correct position.

There are two main problems.

  1. The distance between the robot claw mounting holes is a little bit less than that between the mounting holes on the Sparkfun Medium Servo used. If you look at the Sparkfun tutorial you will see that this leads to the screws being at an angle.
  2. The robot claw mounting holes are too close to the gear mechanism. When the servo is mounted using these holes, the gears are forced together and the unit becomes to tight to operate.

We aim to fine-tune the Sparkfun assembly tutorial with a few modifications to overcome these issues. Please read the Sparkfun Robot Claw Assembly tutorial first then come back here.

There are two main modifications we have made to make the servo fit the robot claw better. In the picture below you will see we have used a fine hacksaw to cut into the servo mounting holes to make them into slots. This allows the servo to be mounted in the correct location.

Also we have used two nylon spacers which have been cut down to a length of 8mm to help mount the servo and hold it firmly in the correct position. You can cut these spacers down easily to the right length with a craft knife

The picture below shows the servo mounted in the correct position. You can see it is several mm to the right of the original mounting holes

The picture below shows the servo from underneath. Notice the nylon spacers which allow you to tighten the screws fully to hold the servo in position securely.

In fact, the spacers are so essential thet we decided to add 2 spacers to each robot claw pack we sell.
